The way I run my NAS is I set the HD to spin down when not accessed for 30 minutes.
At night they are not spinning and as everybody in the household has a job not at working hours either.
In my case a desktop type does the job nicely

I run a 2000GB Samsung (Seagate) Barracuda Green ST2000DL004 in a Qnap 110.
Runs cool and almost noiseless.

I use dbPoweramp for ripping and format conversion.
A pity its PerfectMetadata is only available at rip time.
