Es war wirklich jeder begeistert. :D

Da lässt sich sicherlich was machen.

According to http://kiiaudio.com/prod-pro.html
It really is the first „Mini Main Monitor System“ available
Looks like Thomas Barefoot got company. :)

Agree
The best response from speakers is on axis so pointed at the head of the listener
If you have more than 1 listener, it is recommended to cross the axis in front of the listeners (more toe-in). It is sub optimal for the single guy but beneficial for the rest.

Hi All,

I’m quite impressed by the thoughtful posts made here regarding cardioid cabs and of course Noels extensive report. I’m also enormously flattered that Noel likes the Kii THREE design so much that he would actually duplicate it.

I should explain that my primary reason for making a cardioid is to make an attractive speaker that works well anywhere and doesn’t require users to find the magic spot in their room that sounds good. So it’s user friendliness I’m after, something anyone can buy, set up and enjoy. But for someone prepared to build a speaker, “user-friendliness” is hardly on the radar so you can just as well make something that perhaps wouldn’t ever sell but that works well enough for you and is a lot easier to design.

I’m saying this because although the basic concept is what KSTR describes, it gets hairy when you have to take cabinet diffractions into account and if you want to maintain the cardioid pattern over a substantial frequency range. Otherwise the scheme would have been more common. What I’d like to suggest to Noel is to try approximate what those big built-in studio main monitors do. They don’t need cardioid bass because there’s no “behind” that you want to avoid radiating into. Considering your age I assume you rent your flat so drilling a hole in the wall might not make you very popular. A close approximation would be a large, very flat box with bevelled edges like a truncated pyramid. And if you want to toe them in, perhaps build wedge-shaped enclosures that go in the corners and whose front face nicely segues into the wall. Then you really have a boundary speaker. It’ll be large, it’ll be unwieldy to install but it’ll work.

The second reason why I chose to make a cardioid is because I had an idea that allows me to keep it going up to 700Hz and then, using ordinary methods, maintain comparable dispersion up to about 5kHz. So it’s not just a cardioid bass. Dispersion is constant over most of the band, much more so than on its predecessor. On top of that the acoustic centre of the whole affair (except the tweeter of course) is a point about 5cm in front of the midrange. I was quite chuffed when I figured that one out. So that’s why we’ve got this fancy "Active Wave Focusing" name instead of just calling it a cardioid bass box. That is of course something you don’t get with a flat baffle or a soffit mount but clever choice of driver sizes and crossover points should get you far enough along to be worth the effort. So, in short, Noel, if you’re happy to build a wall-mounted speaker, try that before attempting a cardioid.

Oh yes before I forget, the studio had a fixed projection screen with about half a metre of space behind it. I definitely would have preferred to put the speakers the way I do at home (about 10cm from the wall, will post pic in my introduction thread later) to demonstrate that this really works but that would have put them behind the screen. So instead I just plopped them down where I felt they’d look nice on photographs. No experimentation was done with the placement. Just, bam, one here and one there. On the other hand I could now tell people to go stand in the corner and they’d notice the absence of the usual bass build-up. It was wonderful to see their faces light up. Also the room was really way too good. It’s much more fun to try them in bad acoustics. Well, there’ll be enough hotel shows to prove that.

Regarding toe-in I really don’t understand why heavy toe-in isn’t more popular. When the axes cross in front of the listener, the time of arrival and intensity cues counteract so you get a kind of stereo image even outside the sweet spot. When the axes cross behind the listener, the two cues reinforce each other so the image collapses on the nearest speaker. I’m not the only one doing that. The Marantz room at the MOC had their speakers crossed at 90 degree angles and they gave the same reason for it. You do need controlled dispersion for this trick to work of course. I guess some folks like near-zero toe-in because, as Floyd Toole found, lateral reflections are often euphonic (more “space”). I don’t do euphonics as you’ve probably figured.

I hope you’ll forgive me for going back into hiding and not posting many replies because I seem to have gotten myself into a bit of work lately.

Cheers,
Bruno

ps: really it's OK to reply in German. I always find it silly when 10 Germans and 1 foreigner are in one room suddenly everyone has to speak Foreign. In Vegas do as the vegans do, or what was the expression.

Hallo Bruno,

Daniel

Hello Bruno,

it is an honor for all of us to have you here in this community.

I hope that everything i wrote about the Kii Threes was fairly accurate and that my plans to copy your design don't offend you in any way.

Believe me, if there were any way i could afford the original, i definitely would make the investment.
But ill eventually get richer

I was actually quite shocked about the price at first.
However, after having auditioned some other active Speakers (B&M, Manger, etc), i have to admit that 10k really is a steal considering the Kiis performance and competitors prices.

Kind Regards,

Noel

Almost forgot; Great selection of Music !

"Bisso Baba" by Richard and "Mignon: Gavotte" by Ambroise Thomas were my favorites.

"Night Train" isn't necessarily a Song i would listen to on a regular basis but it sounded very impressive on the Kiis :)

Hallo zusammen,

Bruno hat geschrieben:Regarding toe-in I really don’t understand why heavy toe-in isn’t more popular. When the axes cross in front of the listener, the time of arrival and intensity cues counteract so you get a kind of stereo image even outside the sweet spot.

Viel Spaß bei uns im Forum
