The main advantage of a digital volume control is that it simplifies the signal path, which in turn reduces distortion. Additional equipment in the signal path can only increase distortion. The main disadvantage is that DAC noise is not attenuated relative to the signal as the volume is reduced. Luckily, however, noise is generally considered less objectionable than distortion, so there is still the potential for improved sound quality.
The noise performance of a digital volume control can be optimised by using a passive analog attenuator to scale the digital attenuator such that the DAC operates close to full-scale at normal listening levels. A simple fixed-value in-line attenuator placed directly on the power-amp inputs should work well in most cases. Optimal scaling will be achieved when normal listening levels can be achieved with digital volume settings between 70-80.
